My take on midfielders
As a matter of fact, I don't like to see holding or attacking midfielders, I'd love to see two box to box midfielders complementing each other but which cannot be done at the top flight football as it has been clearly seen that Gerrard-Lampard(both absolutely brilliant box to box midfielders) cannot work together as they both have the tendancy to attack and leave gaps in the midfield which could prove fatal in terms of results.....
So now, coming to midfielders(box-box again), I'd want a midfielder to run his socks off, defend when there is a need to, give passes, create those runs which terrorize the defenders and ofcourse take a shot on goal whenever not cut down or give that decisive pass which would end up in a goal....Its not that easy as a midfielder to do all these, he should have complete vision in his head as to expect where his other team mates would be at any point of time and then to decide on that whether to pass it or run with it....they need to create spaces for the strikers by making runs which would pull the defenders away from the strikers and which would leave the strikers a clear shot on goal.....As a midfielder, its always important to give inch perfect pass during attack(especially when the team is attacking in numbers!!!!) since a wrong pass or an inappropriately weighed pass would lead to a terrible counter attack which could end up in a goal....I see a midfielders lifetime as just 6-8 years, after which he has to stick to one role, that is either attacking only or defending only since his tired legs would not permit him to go up and down the pitch with the same pace.....
I honestly would love to see more of box-box midfielders, though its hard to see new ones coming in this fast paced time where in you need a holding midfielder...but on the other side, I love that at present, holding midfielders are being brought up since this shows that the quality of attacking has increased and there is a great pressure as always on the defense which would improve the beautiful game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Defending like the TITANS
Well for those who've seen the movie, "Remember the TITANS" and in that, the defense when they played in the North Virginia Championship match in which they were being cheated out...thats how a defense should be..though its a fantasy defending like that..they did not even let the opponents take a yard on them from 11 yards out, it was the best piece of defense u can see in any game, though i dont understand head and tail of rugby, its a movie worth watching for sportsmen, damn u dont find anything better than that in defense in any game....
Well in footballing terms, the best defense is supposedly called as a water-leak defense(in literal terms, a defense which wouldn't even let water go past them...that's the way defending should be done for which in any football game, i feel a holding midfielder should be there, he should be the first line of defense, he should take the ball out of the approaching attacker...should cut the attackers down when they try to take a shot and should cover for a centre back(more ofthen than not) if centre back has gone out for cutting out or defending a run....this is what a holding midfielder must and should do...
Now as a central defender, he should sit there and defend like a wall, should protect his goalie during set pieces and should defend with his head...in a sense, he should use his head well and should ensure that there is no basic errors done in clearing, clearing should be long and high as any coach would let u guys know, it should be a simple long kick and one more thing a defender should know is when to go by the line and help out the goal and the last ditch defending...as an example: U can take John Terry, amazing defender, never lets his guard down and goes by the line as soon as he thinks Cech is not in a position to cover the entire length of the goal....thats the way defeneder should defend and have great communication with the goalie...
As a full-back...its easy, going up and down(just 2 say its easy, ask any full back he'd kill me if he reads this), its the most difficult and tedious job, going up while attacking and tracking back while defending and if a cross leads to a goal conceded...people will point to the full back and say he is too attack minded and when a team doesnt score, its because the full backs are not attacking and not delevering crosses....phew, ask a full back, he'll say his life is literal hell....but he'll enjoy every moment of it and ofcourse take the blame for it...no easy way for a full back, should lunge in 2 defend not like central defenders and should ensure no crosses come in and should attack....the problem lies when there is a counter attack when the full backs are attacking...thats when they need to track back complete length of that pitch and then throw his body for defense...its tough, but they do it and they succeed.....
The last and the most important thing in defending..believe in yerself that u could stop conceding a goal and ofcourse if u concede..know that yer attackers will pull back a goal for u and b cheerful!!!!

I wont say how to pass or how to score goals in this blog, that comes to any proffessional footballer as to how to pass and how to control the ball at the feet, what I'd like to talk about is how the game as a whole should be played, according to me as a footballer and a fan is end to end football, quick paced game, with many counter attacks, beautiful dribbling and genuine tackles....
The game should be such that both teams attack and both defenses on the edge of their feet, trying to play a high position up the field....A genuine 4-4-2 formation with one hodling midfielder and other 3 midfielders given license to attack would be the best formation for me and ofcourse have to allow the two wingbacks to go up and down the wing which allows the wingers to be a bit more free and sending in crosses or cutting inside and trying to score goals....That would be a dream sight for any football fan, seeing wingers cutting in and trying to score while the full backs attack and ofcourse while being countered, full backs tearing back 2 defend and the central defenders being posed that challenge to defend, thats the way game should be played, it should go from back to front within seconds.....this is the reason why English football is the most watched football league in the world, they play quick and pacy game and this is what is difference between other leagues and English league, in Spanish primera liga, u see fantastic football ofcourse, but, there is a big BUT, they pass around for such a long time and then in the final third, it breaks down and again you don't see a counter attack, you see a lot of passing which allows the defense to settle down and again break down of play...this is the reason why we dont see many tight games in primera liga, you see the score line of Barca 6-0, 5-0, etc.. Ofcourse with the exception of Real Madrid who concede even if the opponents dont try to create any pressure....
Its about time to play football the way it should be played, back to front way and again back(the way i call it), which is absolutely brilliant for the fans and poses challenges to the teams and provides a lot more tight games...
